Walk down almost any high street in Australia and you will now find red light therapy on a menu board somewhere — tucked between the reformer studio and the infrared sauna, offered as an add-on at a skin clinic, or sold as a ten-pack at the gym. The rooms are dim and faintly theatrical, and the price sits somewhere between a facial and a remedial massage. Meanwhile, the same technology is available as a mask, a handheld wand or a full-length panel you can buy online and keep in the spare room.

The obvious question is whether the clinic version is worth the difference. The honest answer is that it depends far more on the specific provider and the specific device than on the category. A well-run clinic can offer something a home unit genuinely cannot. A poorly run one is selling you a warm room and a countdown timer.

Here is how to tell them apart.

The mechanism, briefly

Red and near-infrared light sits in a band of wavelengths — roughly 600 to 900 nanometres — that penetrates skin more readily than light at the blue end of the spectrum. The prevailing explanation is that light in this range is absorbed by components of the mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside cells, and that this nudges cellular activity. The field is variously called photobiomodulation or low-level light therapy, depending on who is writing.

That is plausible biology rather than magic. What it is not is a blank cheque. A plausible mechanism tells you something might happen; it does not tell you how much, at what dose, or for whom.

The research literature here is genuinely large but uneven. Many studies are small. Dosing is poorly standardised across trials, which means two studies described as testing “red light therapy” may have delivered wildly different amounts of energy to different tissue at different distances. Comparisons between them are shakier than the volume of publication suggests. Skin appearance is the area where the evidence is most consistent, and it is reasonable for a provider to talk about that. Beyond it, the ground gets softer quickly.

What you are actually paying for in a clinic

Set the biology aside and look at the transaction. In a commercial setting you are buying some combination of four things.

Output. Commercial panels and beds are generally larger and more powerful than consumer units, meaning a shorter session and full-body coverage in one go rather than treating one patch at a time. This is the most real of the differences.

Consistency. A fixed installation delivers the same distance, angle and duration every visit. At home, most people drift — closer one day, distracted the next, skipping a fortnight in winter.

Supervision. Someone else sets the timer and manages eye protection. Whether that is worth much depends entirely on the training of that someone.

Environment. A quiet, warm, private room where you do nothing for fifteen minutes. This has value — it is just not a light-specific value, and you should price it accordingly.

What a session actually involves

Expect a short intake form on your first visit covering medications, skin sensitivity and any recent procedures. You will usually undress to your comfort level, since light does not travel through clothing, and be positioned either standing in front of a panel array or lying on a bed.

Sessions typically run between ten and twenty minutes. You will be given goggles or shielded eyewear. The light is bright and warm but should not be hot; near-infrared is largely invisible, so a panel may be doing more than your eyes suggest. There is no downtime afterwards.

Providers almost always sell courses rather than single sessions, on the reasoning that any effect is cumulative. Ten to twelve sessions is a common course.

Cost, honestly compared

Single sessions in Australian clinics commonly sit in the tens of dollars, and multi-session packs bring the per-session figure down. A full course lands in the mid-hundreds, and a standing weekly habit becomes a meaningful annual line item.

A reputable home panel of decent size is typically a several-hundred-dollar purchase, once. Masks and small handhelds are cheaper again.

The arithmetic is not subtle: if you intend to use light regularly and indefinitely, a home device usually wins on cost within months. The clinic case rests on power, coverage and the likelihood you will actually turn up — which, for many people, is not nothing. Be honest about that last one before buying a panel that ends up under the bed.

How to evaluate a provider

This is where a few specific questions separate the serious operators from the rest.

Ask for wavelengths in nanometres. A good provider will tell you their device outputs, for example, specific peaks in the red and near-infrared bands. “Red light” as an answer, with no numbers, means either they do not know or the device documentation does not say. Both are informative.

Ask for irradiance — and at what distance. Irradiance (power density, usually milliwatts per square centimetre) is meaningless without a stated distance, because it falls off sharply as you move away from the panel. A figure quoted with no distance attached is marketing, not a specification. A provider who volunteers “X mW/cm² at 15 centimetres” knows their equipment.

Ask about treatment area. Full-body coverage and a small facial panel are different products at different prices. Know which you are buying.

Check eye protection is standard, not optional. It should be offered without you asking.

Ask about hygiene. Beds and panels are shared surfaces. There should be a visible protocol: wipe-down between clients, fresh linen, sanitised eyewear.

Ask who operates the device and what training they have. Answers range from a clinician with relevant qualifications to a front-desk staffer shown the timer. Neither is disqualifying on its own, but you should know which you have.

The claims test, and why regulation is useful to you

In Australia, a device marketed for a therapeutic purpose is a therapeutic good, regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Devices making therapeutic claims generally must be included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, and there are real restrictions on how such products may be advertised to the public — particularly in relation to serious conditions.

You do not need the regulatory detail. You just need to use it as a filter.

If a provider or retailer is making bold claims about treating named medical conditions, ask directly about the regulatory status of the device they are using. A serious operator will either answer or tell you plainly that they make no medical claims. A vague, irritated or deflecting response to a simple compliance question tells you something about how the rest of the business is run.

Treat these as flags: before-and-after photos with no context, claims to fix conditions you would normally see a doctor for, pressure to buy a large package on the first visit, and testimonials standing in for any description of the device itself.

One caution worth taking seriously

A number of common medications and topical products increase sensitivity to light. These include certain antibiotics, several diuretics and cardiac medications, and various topical preparations. St John’s wort is a well-known herbal example.

This is not a fringe concern, and the list is long enough that guessing is a poor strategy. If you take anything regularly, or use active skincare, check with your pharmacist or GP before starting a course. A pharmacist can usually answer this in a few minutes and it costs nothing. Any clinic that does not ask about your medications during intake has skipped a basic step.

The sensible position

Red light therapy is not a scam, and it is not a cure. It is a plausible technology with a real but uneven evidence base, strongest for skin appearance, sold in a market where equipment quality and operator honesty vary enormously.

If you want to try it, go in with the questions above, expect specifics rather than enthusiasm, and decide on the numbers whether the clinic or the cupboard suits you better.
