Home saunas have become far more accessible, but most people’s first regular experience of heat therapy happens somewhere else — a gym, a bathhouse, a recovery studio, a hotel spa. Commercial facilities differ enormously in what they offer, and the differences matter more than the marketing suggests.

The Main Types, and How They Differ
Traditional Finnish sauna. Dry heat, typically 70 to 90°C, with low humidity that rises when water is poured on hot stones. Electric or wood-fired. This is the format most of the long-running research was conducted in, which matters if you care about matching the practice to the evidence.
Steam room. Much lower temperature, around 40 to 45°C, with humidity near saturation. The subjective experience is intense despite the lower reading, because near-total humidity prevents evaporative cooling. Physiologically this is not the same stimulus as a dry sauna, and evidence collected in one does not automatically transfer to the other.
Infrared cabin. Emitters warm the body directly rather than heating the air, so air temperature sits far lower, often 45 to 60°C. Popular because it feels more tolerable. Worth knowing: the research base here is considerably thinner than for traditional sauna, and the two are frequently discussed as though interchangeable. They are not.
Banya and hammam. Russian and Middle Eastern traditions with their own protocols, often including scrubbing, steam and attendant-led treatments. Culturally rich, and physiologically closer to steam than to dry sauna.
What Separates a Good Facility From a Poor One
Temperature is displayed and accurate. A visible thermometer at bench height, and a facility that maintains its stated range. Cabins that run well below their advertised temperature are common.
Ventilation. A properly built sauna exchanges air continuously. Poor ventilation produces stale, oxygen-depleted air and a markedly worse experience — and it is the single most common fault in cheaply built commercial cabins.
Genuine cleanliness. Warm, humid environments are hospitable to bacteria and fungi. Look for frequent cleaning schedules, non-porous or properly maintained timber, and clean floors. Wear footwear in shared wet areas.
A cooling area. The cooling phase is part of the practice, not an afterthought. A facility with nowhere sensible to cool down is giving you half the experience. Cold showers, a plunge pool, or simply a cool, comfortable space to sit all work.
Somewhere to hydrate. Water should be freely available. Its absence tells you something about how seriously the operator takes the physiology.
Reasonable occupancy. Crowded benches mean less space, more heat variation, and hygiene pressure.
Questions Worth Asking
- What temperature does the cabin actually run at, and is it monitored?
- How often is it cleaned, and how?
- Is there staff supervision, and is anyone trained in first aid?
- What is the policy on session length, and is anyone watching the clock?
- For infrared: what wavelengths, and at what output?
A facility that can answer these easily is usually a facility that has thought about them.
Professional and Clinical Settings
Heat therapy also appears in physiotherapy and sports medicine settings, generally as one component of a broader rehabilitation or recovery plan rather than a standalone intervention.
The important distinction is this: in a clinical setting, heat is applied by a practitioner who has assessed you, for a defined purpose, as part of a plan. That is a different proposition from a commercial cabin available to anyone who buys a membership. If you have an injury or a health condition, the clinical route is the appropriate one, and the assessment is the valuable part.

Etiquette, Which Varies More Than People Expect
- Shower before entering. Universal, frequently ignored.
- Sit on a towel. Both hygiene and courtesy.
- Ask before adding water to the stones in a shared cabin.
- Keep conversation low. Many people are there for quiet.
- Leave if you feel unwell, without waiting to see whether it passes.
Norms differ considerably between countries and between facility types, particularly around clothing. Reading a venue’s posted rules before your first visit avoids awkwardness.
Cost, and Whether Home Is Worth It
Commercial access typically comes as a casual entry fee or a membership. The arithmetic is straightforward: work out your realistic weekly frequency, cost it over a year, and compare against a home unit including installation and running costs.
Two things people underestimate. First, home units get used more often — convenience is the single biggest determinant of consistency, and consistency is where the evidence points. Second, they also get abandoned more often, because nobody else is expecting you.
If you are unsure whether the practice suits you, a few months of commercial use before committing to a purchase is the sensible order of operations.
Safety in Shared Facilities
The physiological cautions are the same as anywhere — the difference is that in a public facility, nobody is monitoring you.
- Do not use a sauna alone late at night in an unstaffed facility.
- Do not use one after drinking alcohol. This is a genuine risk factor, not a technicality.
- Build up your tolerance rather than matching whoever else is on the bench.
- Leave immediately if you feel dizzy, nauseated or confused.
- If you have a cardiovascular condition, are pregnant, or take medication affecting blood pressure or thermoregulation, speak to your doctor before starting.
The Practical Summary
Facility quality varies far more than price does. A well-ventilated, clean, properly heated traditional sauna with a decent cooling area and free water is worth more than a cheaper cabin that runs cold and smells of last week.
Try before you buy, prioritise consistency over intensity, and remember that whatever the setting, the physiology and the cautions travel with you.
