Spirulina has one of the most confident marketing voices in the supplement aisle. It is sold as a “superfood”, a complete protein, a source of iron and B vitamins, and a general-purpose answer to modern tiredness. Some of that is fair. Some of it quietly outruns what any health authority is willing to put in writing. Here is what is actually established, what is not, and the one claim worth being genuinely careful about.
What spirulina actually is
Spirulina is not a plant and not really an algae in the everyday sense. It is a cyanobacterium — a microscopic organism grown in water and dried into a powder or pressed into tablets. The US Food and Drug Administration puts it plainly in its guidance on this category: “Blue-green algae are a unique type of bacteria, also known as cyanobacteria, that grow in water.”
That matters more than it sounds. Because these organisms are grown in open water, what ends up in the tub depends heavily on the pond, the process and the testing — a point we come back to below.
The reference gap nobody mentions
Here is something worth knowing before reading any spirulina claim. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements publishes detailed fact sheets on dozens of supplement ingredients — ashwagandha, echinacea, ginger, ginkgo, garlic, ginseng, milk thistle, turmeric, cranberry and many more. There is no fact sheet for spirulina. The list points readers to a MedlinePlus entry for “blue-green algae” instead, and MedlinePlus itself now carries a notice that, as of 29 July 2025, its herbs and supplements information from the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database is unavailable.
So the usual independent reference layer — the thing that sits between a marketing claim and a shopper — is currently thin for this ingredient. That is not evidence spirulina is bad. It does mean that much of what is written about it online is not being checked against a public monograph, and it is a good reason to read claims about it more slowly rather than less.
The vitamin B12 claim, which is the one that matters
Spirulina is very often promoted as a plant-based source of vitamin B12, and this is the claim most worth pausing on, because getting it wrong has consequences that build quietly over years rather than showing up the next morning.
The NIH’s vitamin B12 fact sheet for health professionals, updated in July 2025, states directly that plant foods do not naturally contain vitamin B12. When it lists the options available to people not eating animal products, it names fortified breakfast cereals and fortified nutritional yeasts. It does not list spirulina, algae or seaweed.
The UK’s NHS reaches the same place independently. Its guidance on the vegan diet, last reviewed in June 2026, lists fortified breakfast cereals, fortified unsweetened soya drinks, yeast extract and fortified nutritional yeast flakes. Spirulina and other algae do not appear there either.
Two of the most-consulted public health sources in the English-speaking world, asked the same question, both answer it with fortified foods and neither reaches for spirulina. The adult recommended intake the NIH gives is 2.4 micrograms a day. If someone has moved away from animal products and is treating a spoonful of green powder as their B12 cover, that is the assumption worth checking with a doctor or pharmacist — not because spirulina is harmful, but because a gap here is invisible until it isn’t.
Contamination, and why the source matters more than the label
The clearest documented safety issue with this category is not the organism itself but what can grow alongside it.
The FDA maintains a page specifically on blue-green algae products and microcystins — toxins produced by certain cyanobacteria such as Microcystis. Its language is unusually direct: “If present at significant levels, microcystins can cause liver and kidney damage when consumed. Microcystins have also been shown to cause tumors in laboratory animals.”
Two things are worth reading carefully there. First, the risk described is a contamination risk, not a property of spirulina itself — the FDA page focuses on wild-harvested AFA (Aphanizomenon flos-aquae) from Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon, and does not name spirulina. Second, the FDA’s practical advice for this whole category is modest and specific: check for recalls, read labels for algae ingredients, follow the serving directions on the pack, talk to a healthcare provider before use — particularly for children — and report any adverse reaction.
The practical upshot is that with this category, who made it and whether it is independently tested carries more weight than the front of the tub.
What the regulations do and do not guarantee
It is easy to assume a supplement on a shelf has been checked by someone. In the United States, under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, described on the FDA’s dietary supplements page updated in October 2024, manufacturers and distributors are responsible for evaluating the safety and labelling of their own products before marketing. There is no pre-market approval step. The FDA acts afterwards, against products found to be adulterated or misbranded.
That is not a scandal — it is simply how the category is built, and it is the reason a confident label is not the same thing as a verified one.
How to read a spirulina product
- Look for independent third-party testing, and for what it tested for — contaminants, not just potency.
- Check the serving size against the figures being quoted at you. Composition claims are usually stated per 100 grams; a typical serving is a small fraction of that.
- Treat “complete protein” and “rich in iron” as statements about the dried powder, not about a spoonful of it.
- Do not rely on it for vitamin B12 without talking to a doctor or pharmacist first.
- Follow the serving directions on the pack rather than scaling up.
The takeaway
Spirulina is a nutrient-dense food ingredient with a marketing story that has run some distance ahead of the public reference material. The honest position is that the major health authorities have not published the kind of detailed assessment for it that they have for many other supplement ingredients, that its most repeated claim — B12 — is one those same authorities decline to make, and that the documented risk in this category is contamination rather than the organism. None of that makes it a bad thing to eat. It does mean the questions worth asking are about the manufacturer, not the marketing.
