Creatine is unusual among supplements in one respect: the cheapest form on the shelf is the one with almost all of the research behind it. That inverts the usual retail logic, where a higher price signals a better-studied product, and it makes the creatine aisle a good place to practise reading labels instead of reading prices.

This article explains what creatine monohydrate is, how it differs from the “advanced” forms sold beside it, what micronised means, and which numbers on a creatine label are worth your attention. It does not claim that creatine does anything for your health or performance, and it does not tell you whether to take it. If you have not read How to Read a Supplement Label, that is the general guide; this one is specific to creatine.

What creatine monohydrate is

Creatine is a compound the body makes from three amino acids and also obtains from meat and fish. As a supplement it is sold almost entirely as creatine monohydrate: one molecule of creatine bound to one molecule of water. That water is part of the crystal, not a sign of a damp product.

The monohydrate is about 88 per cent creatine by weight — the U.S. National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements gives that figure in its fact sheet on supplements for exercise — with the remaining 12 per cent being the bound water. This is the first useful label fact: a 5 g serve of creatine monohydrate contains roughly 4.4 g of creatine. Some labels state creatine per serve, some state creatine monohydrate per serve, and the two differ by that 12 per cent. When comparing products, make sure you are comparing the same thing.

The premium forms, and what the research bodies say about them

Walk past the plain monohydrate and you will find creatine hydrochloride (HCl), buffered creatine (often sold under a trademark), creatine ethyl ester, creatine citrate, creatine nitrate, creatine malate, liquid creatine and various “micronised complex” blends. They cost more, sometimes several times more, and their labels usually say they are better absorbed, need a smaller dose, or cause less stomach upset.

The International Society of Sports Nutrition’s position stand on creatine, published in 2017 and the most-cited review of the evidence, states that claims that different forms of creatine are degraded to a lesser degree than creatine monohydrate in the body, or result in greater uptake to muscle, are currently unfounded. The alternative formulations that have been studied — citrate, serum, ethyl ester, buffered forms and nitrate among them — have not been shown to be retained in muscle better than the standard monohydrate.

That is a statement about the evidence, not a promise about any product. It is worth knowing when a label on a $60 tub says “superior absorption” beside a $20 tub of monohydrate. The claim may be true; it has not been demonstrated in the published literature the ISSN reviewed.

What to read on a premium-form label: the actual compound named in the Supplement Facts panel (not the brand name on the front); the amount of creatine, not just of the compound, per serve; and whether the product also contains monohydrate, which is common in “complexes”.

Micronised versus standard

“Micronised” describes particle size, not chemistry. Micronised creatine monohydrate has been milled to a finer powder — manufacturers typically describe it as up to twenty times smaller than standard mesh — so it disperses in water more readily and settles more slowly. It is still creatine monohydrate. It usually costs a little more than standard-mesh monohydrate and is otherwise labelled identically.

If a product is micronised, the label will say so prominently because it is a selling point. If it does not say so, assume standard mesh, which mixes less smoothly and is otherwise the same compound.

Purity: what “99.9 per cent” means and where the other 0.1 per cent goes

Many monohydrate labels state a purity figure, often 99.9 per cent or higher, sometimes with a manufacturing trademark attached. The figure refers to the proportion of the raw material that is creatine monohydrate as opposed to manufacturing by-products. The by-products that a good manufacturer tests for are creatinine (the breakdown product of creatine), dicyandiamide and dihydrotriazine; a specification sheet will list limits for each. Consumer labels rarely give these figures, but a manufacturer that advertises a named raw-material source usually publishes them on request.

The trademarked raw materials you will see named on labels are, in practice, a promise about where the powder was made and to what specification. They are not a different compound. Two tubs both containing the same trademarked monohydrate are, chemically, the same product with different packaging.

Plain creatine monohydrate has one of the shortest panels in the aisle, which makes any addition stand out.

  • Serving size. Typically 3 g or 5 g, usually one level scoop. Check that the scoop in the tub matches the serving size on the panel; scoops are sometimes sized for a different product in the same range.
  • Creatine monohydrate per serve. Should be the whole serve, or very nearly, in an unflavoured product. If the serving size is 5 g and the creatine monohydrate is 3 g, something else makes up the other 2 g and the ingredient list will say what.
  • Servings per container. A 300 g tub at 5 g per serve is 60 serves; at 3 g it is 100. Cost per serve depends on which serve you will actually use, so calculate cost per gram of creatine instead.
  • Other ingredients. Pure monohydrate lists none. Flavoured products list flavours, sweeteners, colours, acidity regulators and anti-caking agents. “Creatine formulas” may add carbohydrate (often dextrose or maltodextrin), beta-alanine, taurine, electrolytes or B vitamins — each of which is a separate product decision and a separate cost.
  • Allergen and manufacturing statement. Creatine itself is not a common allergen, but the facility often handles milk, soy or gluten and the label says so.

Serving sizes and the numbers in the research

This is a label-reading point, not a recommendation. The reason creatine labels cluster around 3 g and 5 g serves is that those are the amounts used in the published studies. The ISSN position stand describes a loading protocol of 5 g of creatine monohydrate, or approximately 0.3 g per kilogram of body weight, four times daily for five to seven days, followed by maintenance at 3 to 5 g per day, with larger athletes in some studies using 5 to 10 g per day; the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements describes the same loading protocol (20 g per day in four 5 g portions for five to seven days, then 3 to 5 g per day) and an alternative of about 3 to 6 g per day without a loading phase.

When a label states a serving well outside that range — a 1 g serve of a premium form described as “equivalent to 5 g of monohydrate”, for example — the equivalence is a manufacturer’s claim and the ISSN statement above applies. When a label states a very large serve, the panel will usually turn out to be a blend where creatine is only part of the scoop.

Cost per gram of creatine

Because scoop sizes and forms vary, price per tub tells you little. The comparison that works is cost per gram of creatine.

  1. Find the tub weight and the price.
  2. Find the fraction of the tub that is creatine monohydrate (from the panel: creatine monohydrate per serve ÷ serving size). For pure monohydrate this is 1.0.
  3. Multiply by 0.88 to convert monohydrate to creatine.
  4. Divide the price by the resulting grams of creatine.

Prices are illustrative and will not match any retailer on the day you read this; the method is the point. The premium form in the last row costs roughly ten times as much per gram of creatine as plain monohydrate, and the ISSN’s assessment of the evidence for its advantages is quoted above.

What the label will not tell you

  • Whether the product does anything. That is a question for the research literature and for a health professional, not for the packaging, and this article does not answer it.
  • Whether the batch was tested. Unless a third-party seal — Informed Sport, NSF Certified for Sport or similar — appears on the tub. What supplement seals actually certify explains what each programme does and does not check.
  • How it will mix. Micronised mixes better; standard mesh settles. Neither affects what is in the scoop.
  • Whether it suits you. The NIH fact sheet lists weight gain from water retention as the consistently reported side effect and notes anecdotal reports of digestive upset and cramping; anyone with a medical condition or on medication should ask a pharmacist or doctor before buying.

Checklist before you buy

  1. Read the compound in the panel, not the brand on the front.
  2. Check whether the figure is creatine or creatine monohydrate per serve; convert with 0.88 if you need to compare.
  3. For a plain product, confirm the serve is all monohydrate; for a blend, price the creatine content alone.
  4. Decide whether micronised is worth the small premium to you; it changes mixing, not chemistry.
  5. Treat “superior absorption” and “no loading needed” claims on premium forms as claims, and price them per gram of creatine against monohydrate.
  6. Look for a third-party seal if you are subject to sports drug testing.
